Despite a promising start by true freshman quarterback Philip Nelson, the Golden Gophers were buried by the Wisconsin Badgers 38-13 Saturday in Madison, Wis., reported The Associated Press.

The Gophers kept the game tight and were down only 7-6 after first quarter after Nelson tossed the first of his two touchdown passes. The Gophers held the Badgers to only a touchdown in the second quarter to trail at halftime 14-6.

The Badgers built their lead to 24-6 in the third quarter before the Gophers scored a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to close the gap to 24-13.

An on-side kick attempt by the Gophers failed in the ensuing kick-off, and Wisconsin marched on to score two more touchdowns in the fourth to seal the game for the Badgers.

The loss dropped the Gophers to 4-3 on the season and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

The Badgers improved to 6-2 and 3-1 in the Big Ten with the win.

The Gophers return home to TCF Bank Stadium next Saturday to take on Purdue.
