Bemidji State fires longtime head football coach

A longtime Minnesota college football coach has reportedly been fired in Bemidji.

Despite one of their best seasons in years on the field, it's been a tumultuous fall for the Bemidji State football team.

The Beavers are 7-3 with their regular-season finale at home against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.

The team has had that kind of a year after their longtime head coach Jeff Tesch was placed on administrative leave just two days before their first game. Now, it looks like the school is parting ways with its head coach.

According to the Bemidji Pioneer, Tesch received a letter from the university Monday notifying him that he was fired as the Beavers' head football coach.

The Star Tribune reports that Tesch's union already announced it's planning to file a grievance to challenge the university's decision.

What happened?

Bemidji State hasn't had a lot to say about the situation.

On Aug. 30 the school announced Tesch was on a "leave of absence" and that assistant coach and defensive coordinator Brent Bolte had been named the interim head coach.

Tesch remained relatively quiet about the situation until last week, when he began talking to the media in the Bemidji area.

According to the Bemidji Pioneer, a complaint was filed against the coach in August for using a racial slur during a preseason practice after he heard music with vulgar lyrics playing during practice.

Tesch tells Lakeland Public Television that he became upset because playing that kind of music during practice was against team rules. Here is a full interview with the coach about the incident.

In 20 seasons at Bemidji State, Tesch led the Beavers to a 126-91 record. He was named the NSIC's Coach of the Year in 2006.
