Bethel routes St. Scholastica in opening round of playoffs

Bethel destroyed St. Scholastica in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championships, 70-13. It is likely the final college football game ever to be played at the Metrodome.

Bethel's Erik Petersen threw four touchdown passes and Brandon Marquardt rushed for three scores.

The Star Tribune reports the game was moved to the Metrodome because of the cold weather.

Bethel scored touchdowns on each of its first two drives to quickly make it 14-0. Things then went from bad to worse for St. Scholastica. The ensuing kickoff was mishandled by return man Josh Simmons, Bethel's Josh Werness recovered it at the Saints 7. That set up Marquardt's second touchdown of the afternoon.

By the time halftime rolled around the Royals were up 43-13.

Petersen threw for 300 yards to go with those four touchdowns as he completed 25 of 27 passes. Marquardt carried the rushing game as he picked up 112 yards on the ground on just 15 carries.

One the other side of the ball, the Royals got the job done, holding St. Scholastica to just 188 total yards.

Bethel (11-0) hosts Wartburg next week in the second round of the playoffs.
