Bona nets game winner as Gophers beat Beavers

Rachel Bona's game-winning goal with 1:45 to play lifted the Gopher women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Bemidji State on Friday afternoon.

It was Bona's 13th goal of the season, and broke a two-all tie despite Minnesota dramatically controlling the ice for most of the afternoon.

Hannah Brandt added a goal and an assist for Minnesota, while Milicia McMillen had a pair of helpers to lift the Gophers.

The play of Beavers goaltender Brittni Mowat gave Bemidji State a chance. Minnesota outshot the Beavers 43-19, but Mowat stopped 40 of them.

Despite the Gophers controlling the ice, it was Bemidji State who took the early lead. Alex Citrowske put the Beavers on the board with her fourth goal of the season.

Dani Cameranesi evened the score for the Gophers, early in the second with her 20th goal of the season. She was assisted by both Brandt and McMillen. Just over three minutes later it was Brandt's turn to light the lamp. She gave the Gophers their first lead of the afternoon at 2-1.

After Bemidji tied it at two in the third, Bona found the net for the game-winner, sending Minnesota to their fourth straight victory.

The weekend series continues Saturday afternoon in Bemidji.
