Brodin doesn't need surgery, Coyle making progress

Author:

Good news on two injury fronts for the Minnesota Wild today.

Defenseman Jonas Brodin's broken cheekbone will not require surgery, according to coach Mike Yeo, via the Star Tribune. The team is cautiously optimistic that Brodin will resume skating on Friday, although no plans have been made for his return to game action.

Brodin suffered the injury in Minnesota's 2-nothing win over Nashville on Tuesday.

Fellow defenseman Ryan Suter told KFAN-FM 100.3 that Brodin looked like he had a tennis ball in his mouth Wednesday, but the swelling reduced to the size of a golf ball Thursday.

Second line center Charlie Coyle hasn't played since suffering a sprained MCL in the second game of the season, but he made progress today by skating with his teammates for the first time since the injury.

"We've held our head above water," Yeo told the Pioneer Press. "We haven't exactly dominated in this last little stretch. That's a big loss for us, and we're anxious to get him back."

Yeo did not give a timetable for Coyle's return.

Minnesota plays host to the Carolina Panthers tonight.
