Sam Carlson is a flame-throwing pitcher at Burnsville High School, and he has a legitimate chance at becoming the first Minnesota high school pitcher taken in the first round of the MLB Draft next June.

According to MLB.com, Carlson is the 15th best prospect in the upcoming draft. Here's what the website has to say about the local product.

In 52 years of Drafts, no Minnesota high school pitcher has gone in the first round and only four have gone in the second, most recently Mitch Brown to the Indians in 2012. As an athletic right-hander whose stuff continues to get better, Carlson could become the state's first prep first-round arm. Scouts already loved his build and his feel for pitching, and now his stuff has improved significantly this spring.

After hovering around the high-80s last summer, Carlson's fastball is now touching in the mid-90s. He also dangles a slider and a changeup with both pitches having tremendous movement.

The Pioneer Press notes, the right-hander once pitched in front of 40 major league scouts, which is the kind of crowd that hasn't been seen since Joe Mauer was at Cretin-Derham Hall.

He's currently committed to the University of Florida unless he forgoes that scholarship and elects to turn pro.

The Twins own the top pick in this year's MLB Draft but it's unlikely the team will draft Carlson first overall as most outlets having him going in the middle of the first round.
