Cardinals hold off Twins' rally in series opener

The Minnesota Twins weren't able to make it two straight. they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis Monday night.

The Twins couldn't figure out Cardinals starter John Lackey, who tossed eight innings and held Minnesota to two runs on five hits in picking up the victory.

Trevor May (4-5) started for the Twins. He allowed three runs in five innings, including back-to-back solo home runs by Mark Reynolds and Yadier Molina in the fourth inning as he took the loss.

There wasn't a ton of offense for either team. Molina led the way for the Cardinals, going 3-for-4 with the home run, while Randal Grichuk was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Twins made it a one run game in the eighth inning. Byron Buxton collected his first big league hit, with a one-out triple to the left center field gap. He then came around to score one pitch later on a sacrifice fly from Brian Dozier.

For many Twins fans it was their first chance to see Buxton's speed.

Dozier and Kurt Suzuki drove in the only two Twins runs.

The Twins and Cardinals will wrap up the St. Louis portion of their series on Tuesday. Kyle Gibson takes the mound for Minnesota against Michael Wacha.
