Cause of death ruled in high school athlete who fled underage party

Author:

The Dawson-Boyd High School standout football player who was reported missing after sheriff's deputies responded to a drinking party in a rural area near Madison died of hypothermia due to environmental exposure.

The Marshall Independent reports that alcohol consumption was listed as a contributing factor in the death of Michael Anyasike, 18, according to Lac qui Parle County coroner Ralph Gerbig. The Star Tribune reports that Anyasike and several other teenagers fled when an underage party at a vacant western Minnesota farmhouse was busted by sheriff's deputies on March 9. When Anyasike didn’t return home that night, his family called authorities.

WCCO reported that Anyasike was found 12 hours later about a mile from where the party had taken place. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Anyasike played football for Dawson-Boyd High School and had been planning to attend St. John’s University in Collegeville.

The sheriff’s office reported that about 20 vehicles were parked at the farm site where the party was held, and an unspecified number of teens were issued citations for underage consumption. Authorities haven’t said where the underage drinkers at the party obtained alcohol, but the county has a social host law, which holds criminally responsible any adult who allows a group of people under 21 to drink alcohol on public or private property.
