Close, but no MVP: Moore finishes 2nd to LA's Parker

Though she appeared to be the favorite, the Lynx' Maya Moore did not win the MVP of the WNBA, finishing behind Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks Thursday.

The Pioneer Press reports Parker finished with 234 points in the balloting of 39 national media members. Moore was second with 218. Both received 10 first-place votes. It was the closest balloting since 2005 when Sheryl Swoopes edged Lauren Jackson by two points.

Both Parker and Moore received 10 first-place votes each from the 39-member voting panel consisting of media from across the country, according to the Associated Press.

Parker averaged 17.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists for the Sparks, who finished second to the Lynx in the Western Conference. Moore averaged 18.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Lynx.

It's the second MVP award for Parker, who also won it her rookie year. Parker also won the All-Star game MVP this past July.
