College hockey roundup: UMD sweeps Gopher men, Gopher women still unbeaten

A couple of in-state rivalries are highlighted in Saturday's college hockey action in Minnesota.

UMD 3, Gopher men 0

The UMD Bulldogs swept the Gopher men's hockey team with a 3-0 win in front of a record crowd of 7,569 at Amsoil Arena on Saturday night in Duluth. They also won Friday night 3-1 over the Gophers at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

The Bulldogs scored two goals in the first period and the third early in the second period, and goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo made 21 saves as he shut out the Gophers, who are 0-3 in the young season. The Gophers have only scored one goal in their first three games, the Star Tribune reports.

North Dakota 5, Bemidji State 2

North Dakota, the No. 1 team in the country, defeated Bemidji State 5-2 Saturday night in Grand Forks. The game was tied at 2-2 early in the third period, but UND scored three goals to put the game out of reach. The two teams tied 4-4 Friday night.

Freshman Brock Boeser scored a hat trick for UND (2-0-2), according to UNDSports.com.

St. Cloud State 3, MSU Mankato 0

St Cloud State University defeated the Mavericks of Minnesota State 3-0 Saturday night and completed the weekend sweep, according to the SCSU Huskies website. St. Cloud State also won Friday night 4-0.

The Mavericks are the defending WCHA champions.

Minnesota women 11, Ohio State 2

The Gopher women continued their dominance with an 11-2 victory over Ohio State Saturday afternoon They beat the Buckeyes 7-2 Friday night, and are undefeated on the season so far.

The Gophers scored six goals in the second period alone.

Hannah Brandt led the Gophers with three goals and three assists, while Dani Cameranesi had two goals and three assists, according to GopherSports. com. Fifteen Gophers had at least one point in the game.

The Gophers (6-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA) are ranked No. 1 in the country. They'll host UMD next weekend.
