College Hockey: St. Cloud State wins NCHC tournament

Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 1

St. Cloud State Huskies 3

The St. Cloud State Huskies captured their first NCHC conference tournament win since 2011 thanks to a pair of goals from freshman forward Mikey Eyssimont.

The Bulldogs took off to an early lead with the only goal in the first period thanks to a strong cross-ice pass from Willie Raskob that found Carson Soucy for the easy tap-in.

Eyssimont, a freshman from the Denver metro area, captured the tournament's MVP award on the tail of another electric performance for the Huskies. The freshman made a highlight-worthy shot from his knees in the crease, facing away from the goal bust still managing to sweep the puck in around UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo. Eyssimont has 12 goals since the holiday break.

Despite losing the conference title game to St. Cloud, the UMD Bulldogs will advance to the NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament, courtesy of the Gopher's loss to Michigan earlier tonight. St. Cloud State, who holds the third best record in the NCAA, will also receive a tournament invitation. Tournament seeding will be announced at 11am on Sunday, according to the NCAA.
