College Hockey: UMD, St. Cloud set to square off for NCHC title


NCHC Semifinals

Minnesota Duluth 4, North Dakota 2

After being held to two goals and getting swept by North Dakota in four regular season meetings, Minnesota Duluth beat the Fighting Hawks 4-2 Friday evening in the NCHC semifinals at Target Center.

Dominic Toninato scored a pair of goals, while Willie Roskob and Adam Johnson each added a pair of assists. Alex Iafallo chipped in a goal and an assist in the Bulldogs' win.

The victory moved the Bulldogs into the NCHC Championship game on Saturday, where they will face St. Cloud State.

St. Cloud State 4, Denver 2

St. Cloud State University is headed for the NCHC Championship game after they beat Denver 4-2 Friday night at Target Center.

Joey Benik scored a goal and an assist, while Kalle Kossila added a pair of assists to lead the Huskies.

The teams exchanged goals until early in the third quarter when Mikey Eyssimont scored giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead. It didn't take too long for Denver to answer back.

But the Huskies put the game away on an empty net goal from Jimmy Schuldt.

St. Cloud State will square off with Minnesota Duluth in the NCHC Championship Saturday at Target Center.

WCHA Semifinals

Minnesota State 2, Bowling Green 1

Minnesota State University Mankato advanced to the WCHA Tournament Championship game with a 2-1 victory over Bowling Green Friday.

Brad McClure and Casey Nelson scored less than two minutes apart early in the first period to give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead, which stood up the rest of the way.

Cole Huggins stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced to pick up the victory in net.

Mavericks coach Mike Hastings reacted after the MSU victory.

The Mavericks will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Ferris State and Michigan Tech.
