College Hockey: Wilcox, Gophers shutout Penn State

Adam Wilcox recorded the 12th shutout of his career as the Minnesota Gophers opened their final weekend series of the regular season with a 5-0 victory over Penn State.

Wilcox stopped all 18 shots in the game.

Justin Kloos and Hudson Fasching both picked up a goal and an assist and Mike Reilly added two helpers in the Gophers victory.

Minnesota outshot the Lions 40-18.

The series continues on Saturday.

Minnesota State routes Lake Superior State in WCHA playoffs

The Mavericks opened their best-of-three game WCHA first round series with a 9-2 route of Lake Superior State on Friday night in Mankato.

Jean-Paul Lafontaine scored a goal and tallied three assists to lead Minnesota State's season-high nine goal effort. Casey Nelson added a goal and a pair of assists.

The Mavericks scored six power play goals in the game, and outshot Lake Superior State 59-18.

Game two of the series is on Saturday in Mankato.

Bemidji falls in series opener to Ferris State

Ferris State won game one of their best-of-three game WCHA playoff series over Bemidji State 4-1 on Friday night.

Gerry Fitzgerald netted the lone goal for the Beavers, in the loss.

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead on goals from Zach Szajner, Ryan Loney and Gerald Mayhew.

Bulldogs goal Cj Mote did the rest, stopping 21-of-the-22 shots he faced.

Game two of the series is on Saturday in Bemidji.

UMD drops playoff opener to Denver

Ty Loney had a hat trick to lead Denver to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota Duluth in the opening game of their best-of-three game playoff series.

The Bulldogs took a brief 3-2 lead in the third.

Danton Heinen tied the game at three just a few minutes later, and Loney gave Denver the lead for good at the 15:26 mark of the third.

The Bulldogs and Denver will continue their series tomorrow.

Huskies beat Omaha in double overtime

David Morley scored the game winner in double overtime to lead St. Cloud State to a 2-1 victory over Omaha.

It was Morley's second goal of the night. He also gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the first period.

But Austin Orrtega tied it up in the second period. The game stayed that way until the second overtime when Morley netted the game-winner.

The series continues on Saturday.
