Columbia Heights, Delano advance to 3A championship game

DeLaSalle's run of six straight state titles is over.
Publish date:

For the first time since 2012 there will be a new Class 3A boys' basketball state champion, and it'll be Columbia Heights or Delano after both teams advanced to the championship with upsets over the top two seeds in the tournament.

The six-time defending champion DeLaSalle Islanders, the No. 1 seed again this year, were upset by No. 4 Columbia Heights by a score of 71-69 Thursday at Target Center.

Leading the way for Heights was 6'6'' senior forward Wendell Matthews, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

DeLaSalle dominated Columbia Heights by a combined 51 points in two regular season games, so this upset is of monumental proportions.

Delano upsets #2 Austin

In a fast-paced game it was the Delano Tigers knocking off No. 2 Austin 80-68, and it was a second straight monster performance by Delano's Calvin Wishart.

The senior guard who will play at Georgia Southern finished with a ridiculous 29 points, 19 rebounds and 7 assists. He did that after scoring 35 points with 12 rebounds in Wednesday's quarterfinal win over Mankato East.

The Class 3A state championship game will begin just after 5 p.m. Saturday at Target Center.
