Crashed Ice coming back to St. Paul in February

Organizers Wednesday will announce details about the return of Crashed Ice to St. Paul, the Pioneer Press reports.

Sponsored by the energy drink Red Bull, the event -- officially known as Red Bull Crashed Ice -- will return to St. Paul Feb. 20-22.

The extreme sports event will once again take place below the Cathedral of St. Paul. The 2013 Crashed Ice event attracted more than 115,000 spectators, although reports pegged numbers for the championship as high as 150,000.

The competition features a track where skaters reach speeds of up to 40 mph as they face a series of drops, jumps and sharp turns.

The big difference with Crashed Ice in 2014 is that it will not overlap with the St. Paul Winter Carnival, the Pioneer Press says.

This year's Crashed Ice championship took place on Jan. 26, the same day as the Winter Carnival's King Boreas Grande Day Parade.

The 2014 Winter Carnival is set for Jan. 23 through Feb. 2.

The 2014 Crashed Ice competition will mark the third time the event will take place in St. Paul.

The Star Tribune reports that an estimated 80,000 people attended the inaugural event in 2012.

Last year's event generated an estimated $20 million in economic activity in the city.

Red Bull is also set to host Crashed Ice events in Finland, Russia and Canada in 2014.

Lakeville native Cameron Naasz was among the stars in the 2013 competition, finishing third in the overall standings.
