Decision coming on whether Minnesota will host College Football Championships

Author:

Minnesota will find out on Wednesday whether it will host another major sporting event at the $1 billion U.S. Bank Stadium.

After securing the 2018 Super Bowl and 2019 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four, Minnesota will find out if its bid to host the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championships has been successful.

According to Vikings.com, the final decision will be made Wednesday, with the Twin Cities up against the Bay Area, Charlotte, Houston, New Orleans and San Antonio.

It would be another coup for the 65,000-seater, part-taxpayer-funded stadium that is due to open in time for the 2016/17 NFL season, with Minnesota's bid to the college championship having been submitted in March.

"Anytime you have an opportunity to bring a world-class event like this to your home state, and especially to our home stadium, it's exciting," Vikings COO Kevin Warren said.

"To think we have the opportunity to have the Super Bowl, which we’ve solidified in 2018, the Final Four in 2019 and then to be able to get the College Football Playoff Championship Game in 2020 would be incredible here for the Twin Cities."

According to the Vikings, the economic impact of the Ohio State v Oregon college final earlier this year in Dallas was estimated at $300 million.

The Vikings stadium could be in line for another major event, with Minneapolis one of the frontrunners to host WrestleMania in 2017. A decision on this is likely to be made by the WWE in January.
