2 major upsets highlight opening day of the State Hockey Tourney

It's the first time one of the top two seeds has ever lost in the first round of the Class A tournament.

The Minnesota State Hockey Tournament has opened with a pair of upsets Wednesday.

No. 2 Delano lost 3-2 to Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake in the opening game of the day.

According to the Star Tribune's David LaVaque, it's the first time one of the top two seeds has lost in the first round of the Class A tournament.

Northfield 3, Mahtomedi 1

The upsets continued in the second game as unseeded Northfield skated by #3 Mahtomedi 3-1. It was a victory for Northfield in their first state tournament game in program history.

The Raiders win means an unseeded team will advance to the state championship. They'll meet up with Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake in the semifinals.

Hermantown 3, Luverne 2 ot

It took overtime, but defending Class-A champion and #1 seed Hermantown beat Luverne 3-2 in the State Class A quarterfinals.

Dylan Kolquist scored the game-winner 42 seconds into overtime.

It was the first Class A quarterfinal game that was won by the high seed.

Luverne will meet up with the winner of the quarter final game between East Grand Forks and St. Cloud Cathedral.

St. Cloud Cathedral 6, East Grand Forks 3

The 2A tournament starts Thursday.
