The Target Center is playing host to the NCHC Tournament Championship. The tournament is also called the Frozen Face off features Western Michigan, Denver, North Dakota and Miami of Ohio. Like the Big Ten Tournament it has seen its share of upsets already.
Friday night was no exception in the semifinals.
In the opening game Denver advanced to the championship game with a 4-3 victory over Western Michigan. Ty Loney's even strength goal in the third period broke a three all tie to be the difference maker for Denver.
It was a back-and-forth game as Western Michigan got on the scoreboard first. Nolan LaPorte opened up the scoring just :42 seconds into the game. Before the end of the first Denver bounced back to score a pair of goals and take a 2-1 lead after one.
It didn't stay that way long. Back-to-back goals by Western Michigan in the second gave them back the lead at 3-2. With just :04 remaining in the period, though Denver tied it up on Joey LaLeggia.
In the other game, Ryan McKay stopped all 27 shots he faced to lead them to a 3-0 win over North Dakota. Blake Coleman, Austin Czarnik and Anthony Louis all scored for Miami.
The championship is tomorrow night at the Target Center. Face off is scheduled for 7:30.
