Eastview retires No. 96 in honor of teen hockey player who died last year

Patrick Schoonover – the 14-year-old hockey player who collapsed and died during a game last year – was honored Saturday.

His No. 96 jersey was retired in a ceremony before the Eastview Boy's High School Hockey game against Cretin-Derham Hall Saturday afternoon. Eastview went on to win the game, 5-2, the Eastview athletics website says.

“It's neat to see the community reach out and take care of us and take care of Patrick," Mike Schoonover, Patrick's father, told KSTP.

Patrick died during a tournament in Brainerd in November 2014. His death was caused by undetected heart defects – something that prompted his family to start the Play for Patrick foundation.

The foundation, which is working with the University of Minnesota Physician's Heart Clinics to educate and inform families about heart defects, hosts heart screening events for young athletes in the Twin Cities, according to a GoFundMe page. The organization hopes to raise $96,000 to help make heart scans more accessible and affordable, the page notes.

During a screening back in August, three students found out they had heart abnormalities, KSTP says.

The next Play for Patrick heart screening is scheduled to coincide with the Play for Patrick Tournament, hosted by the Eastview Hockey Association, on Jan. 16. Additional screenings will be held in March and April, click here for more information.

The Play for Patrick foundation was recently profiled on the show "State of Hockey." Watch it below.
