Ex-NBA player calls WNBA players 'high self-esteem ugly chicks'

Author:

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas is being criticized for comments he made about female basketball players on Instagram.

Arenas has posted multiple times on Instagram (warning: the comments are NSFW) saying WNBA players should play in bikinis if they want their league to be popular. Arenas went as far as to use Tulsa Shock star Skylar Diggins as an example, saying if she played wearing skimpy clothing he wouldn't care "if she missed every layup..imma buy season tickets."

In a separate post, Arenas referred to players in the WNBA as "boogawolfs," and after being criticized he posted again, referring to female players as a "bunch of high self-esteem ugly chicks." He added that most men "only know the cute" players, including Lynx star and former WNBA MVP Maya Moore.

Needless to say, Arenas's viewpoints haven't been well received.

Seimone Augustus of the Lynx retweeted the

" target="_blank">reaction of Indiana Fever guard Marissa Coleman.

I'll just leave this here... We've got too many impressionable young girls ready to run the world, to let ANY MAN or woman plant seeds of doubt! #burnbright my loves ✊ ✊ ✊ ✊ ✊✊ #positivevibes #whattrulymatters #hoopdreams #striveforgreatness #motivateeducateelevate

A league spokesperson for the WNBA released a statement saying Arenas's comments "are repugnant, utterly disrespectful and flat-out wrong."

"They should be celebrated for their accomplishments, not disparaged with ignorant insults."

Per NBC, Arenas was suspended for the second half of the 2009-10 NBA season and sentenced to two years probation after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room following a disagreement over a game of cards.

According to Las Vegas Review-Journal, the average attendance at WNBA games in 2015 was a record-low 7,318 fans per game. From 2012-2014 the Lynx averaged more than 9,000 fans per game, which ranked second in the league each season.
