James Laurinaitis can forget about packing his bags and joining the Rams on their move from St. Louis to Los Angeles.
Laurinaitis, a former Wayzata High School star football player, was among three popular Rams players released on Friday. Tight end Jared Cook and defensive end Chris Long were also cut.
Laurinaitis started 16 games last season and finished second on the Rams with 109 tackles. The nine-year pro out of Ohio State has finished with at least that many tackles every season since being drafted in the second round in 2009.
The move appears to be based on salary rather than performance. Cutting the trio saves the Rams more than $24 million cap space, NFL Media's Albert Breer reports.
Who knows, maybe Laurinaitis will end up in New England where star linebacker Jerod Mayo just announced his retirement at the age of 29.
Laurinaitis helped Wayzata reach the Class 5A Prep Bowl in 2004 before losing to Minnetonka.
