North Dakota State could be matched up with the only team that's beaten them this season in the quarterfinal round of the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) playoffs.

NDSU received a No. 1 seed and an automatic bye into the second round of tournament. South Dakota State, the team that stunned the Bison in dramatic fashion earlier this season, got the 8-seed in the same half of the bracket. SDSU also has a bye into the second round, and the stage is set for the border rivals to meet again if they both advance to the quarterfinals.

NDSU will host the winner of Cal Poly (7-4) and San Diego (9-1). SDSU will host the winner of Villanova (8-3) and Saint Francis (7-4).

NSDU's second-round game is set for 3:30 p.m. Dec. 3 on ESPN3.

SDSU shocked the five-time reigning national champions at the Fargodome 19-17 on a last-second touchdown back on Oct. 15. The winning touchdown was caught by former Maple Grove High School (Minnesota) standout Jake Wieneke.

NDSU won last year with Carson Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, at quarterback. But it was Easton Stick, a freshman last season, who started at quarterback before Wentz was ready to return from a broken arm in the championship game.

"The reps he had were so valuable. He made big plays in big games," NDSU head coach Chris Klieman said in an interview on ESPN's selection show. "We don't win the national championship last year without Easton Stick."

Stick is 18-1 as a starter.

"He's an unbelievable winner. I know that his best football is in front of him. He's only a sophomore," Klieman added.

North Dakota (9-2) has won nine straight games and earned the No. 7 seed in the top half of the bracket. They also have a bye into the second round.
