A running back on the recent University of Minnesota Duluth football championship teams died this week in a Wisconsin car crash.

Nate Bauer, who graduated from UMD in 2012, died Monday at the age of 26.

According to WEAU, authorities say it looks like Bauer didn't follow a curve, and wound up going down a steep ravine before landing in a creek.

The Duluth News Tribune reports authorities say Bauer was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the wreck. They believe the crash happened Sunday, when people nearby heard a suspicious sound. But his vehicle wasn't found until Monday.

Bauer worked in the Menomonie Area school district as a physical education teacher, for both the Knapp and Donwsville elementary schools. He was a 2007 graduate of Menomonie High School and afterward went to UMD where he redshirted his freshman year.

He was a four-year football letter winner, and was with the Bulldogs in 2008 and 2010 when they won the NCAA Division II national championship.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bauer family," said UMD head football coach Curt Wiese in a statement. "Nate will be remembered as tremendous person, student, and teammate and he had a way of making those around him better. He'll be greatly missed and forever a Bulldog."
