The 2018 McDonald Award is probably going to go to Apple Valley senior point guard, Tre Jones, who will play at Duke next fall just like his older brother, Tyus Jones of the Timberwolves.
But that doesn't mean the 34 other semi-finalists for the McDonald Award don't have a shot to win it, including Sam Vascellaro of St. Thomas Academy.
Not to be overshadowed by his TV star parents, Frank Vascellaro and Amelia Santaniello of WCCO, the 6'5'' guard/forward has helped lead St. Thomas Academy to a 14-9 record and second place in the Metro East Conference.
And with tournament season right around the corner, high school hoops fans could get to see a lot more of Vascellaro because the Cadets are the likely No. 1 seed in Section 3AAA, meaning they'll be favored to reach the state tournament again this March.
Vascellaro is averaging 15.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals per game this season, according to MN Basketball Hub, and he recently joined the 1,000 point club at STA.
Here are highlights from his junior season, but word in the Twittersphere is that he's upped his game quite a bit as a senior.
The McDonald Award is in its first year as the replacement to the Mr. Basketball Award. The 35 semi-finalists will be trimmed to 10 in March, with the winner being selected after the state tournament.
For the record, Frank has some game, too.
