Gagliardi retires as St. John's football coach

St. John'sJohn Gagliardi, the winningest coach in college football history, has decided to retire, according to several reports. The official announcement has been posted on the St. John's web site.

Gagliardi, who has recorded 489 career wins, told the St. Cloud Times that the Nov. 10 regular season finale against Bethel was his final game.

Gagliardi, 86, has led the Johnnies to four national titles over the past 60 years.

He's coming off a 3-5 record in the MIAC, the most conference losses for the Johnnies since Gagliardi started coaching there in 1953.

As for possible successors, Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant -- son of ex-Vikings coach Bud Grant -- is a considered to be a leading candidate, according to the Star Tribune.
