Conservative offensive showing in Gophers' spring scrimmage

The Minnesota Gophers' offense played conservatively Saturday in the team's spring football game at TCF Bank Stadium. The Associated Press reports that starting quarterback Mitch Leidner completed 7 of 15 passes for 74 yards as the offensive squad competed against the defense in the exhibition before 4,752 fans.

The offense "won" 19-0, but had trouble scoring against a defense that was missing six linemen who didn't play because of injuries, the Star Tribune reports. The offense failed to score on its first five drives, and only managed one touchdown and four field goals on the afternoon.

“I’m disappointed, I like scoring touchdowns,” said Leidner, according to the Associated Press. He became the Gophers’ starter after Phil Nelson left the program. “At the same time, we learned a lot, we’re going to watch the film and get better from that.”

The offensive highlight was a 33-yard touchdown run by Berkley Edwards against the third-team defense, according to the Star Tribune.

Rodrick Williams led all rushers with nine carries for 52 yards. Edwards finished with 11 carries for 46 yards, and David Cobb had seven carries for 29 yards.
