Gophers' assistant coach Saul Smith will return to the men's basketball team on Nov. 13, the Star Tribune reports. Smith is on paid leave until his comeback. The son of head coach Tubby Smith was arrested for DUI last week. Athletic director Norwood Teague says Smith will undergo alcohol counseling and apologize to the team.
Saul Smith, the son of Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith, is placed on indefinite unpaid administrative leave after a Saturday arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Norwood Teague, the soon-to-be Gophers' athletic director, is confident head basketball coach Tubby Smith will sign a contract extension in the near future. “It’s not done yet but hopefully it’s something that will be done very soon," Teague said.
NIT chairman C.M. Newton says Tubby Smith won't lead the Gophers to an NCAA championship without a new practice facility. Newton was Kentucky's athletic director when Smith led the Wildcats to an NCAA title in 1998. Minnesota's athletic director Joel Maturi says "there's no question" the Gophers basketball team needs its own practice facility, and they "need to find a way to get it."

Trevor Mbakwe told reporters on Friday that he was arrested for DWI earlier this summer. Police reports indicate he was arrested July 1st and pleaded guilty on September 10th. The issue is being handled internally, but coach Tubby Smith said he almost kicked Mbakwe off the team.
