Austin Hollins powers Gophers past Northwestern

The Gopher men's basketball team won their second Big Ten contest of the season with a decisive victory over Northwestern on Sunday. The final score at Williams Arena was 69-51.

The Star Tribune reports that Minnesota's Austin Hollins landed five consecutive 3-pointers in the second half, finishing with 19 points. The crowd gave the point guard a standing ovation as he left the floor.

Senior Rodney Williams landed his 1,000th career point on a layup in the first half.

The Gophers were ranked no. 9 in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll that was released Monday, Dec. 31. The Pioneer Press reports that the last time the University of Minnesota was ranked in the top 10 was during the 1996-97 vacated Final Four season.
