Destiny Pitts is one of the true reasons the Gophers women's basketball team will be a dangerous opponent, both in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
Pitts, on Monday, was picked by the coaches and media as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Pitts won the Freshman of the Week in the conference seven times during the regular season, so Monday's award comes as no surprise.
She's fourth on the Gophers in scoring at 13.1 points per game, and Pitts leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 per game, in addition to shooting 36.7 percent from three.
Pitts is the fourth Gopher to win the award. The last was Amanda Zahui B. in 2014.
Meanwhile, Carley Wagner and Kenisha Bell were selected by the coaches and media as All-Big Ten First Team members, while Pitts made the All-Big Ten Second Team as voted on by the media.
Big Ten Tournament this week
After finishing tied third in the Big Ten, the Gophers earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. That means they get a bye all the way to the quarterfinals and don't have to play until Friday.
The Big Ten Tournament starts Wednesday. Check out the bracket right here.
