The Gopher men's basketball team opened the season with a 72-36 blowout win over American University Friday night at Williams Arena. Austin Hollins led all scorers with 20 points.

Minnesota is off until Monday when they host Toledo.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, a couple of powerhouses lost their season openers. Michigan State was beaten by a good Connecticut team, and Purdue fell to Bucknell.

The top-ranked Golden Gopher men's hockey team dominated Michigan, 5-1 in the season opener at Mariucci Arena Friday night. Ben Marshall, Nick Bjugstad, Christian Isackson, Erik Haula and Travis Boyd scored for the Gophers.

Northwestern defeated Minnesota 64-53 in the Big Ten contest Saturday night. Both teams went into the game tied for seventh place. The Gophers (17-10, 5-9 Big Ten) have now lost their last three games. Minnesota welcomes Michigan State to Williams Arena on Wednesday.
