Minnesota Gophers starting junior cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL, coach Jerry Kill said Tuesday.

Boddy-Calhoun had an 89-yard interception return for a touchdown in the season opener but injured the knee on the third play of Saturday's game at New Mexico State.

Boddy-Calhoun had replaced junior Derrick Wells as the starter because of a Wells' hamstring injury. Wells made his season debut against New Mexico State and will have to play a bigger role now, Kill said, reports the Pioneer Press.

Boddy-Calhoun will likely be granted a medical redshirt, allowing him to retain two years of eligibility, says ESPN.
