Gophers quarterback Chris Streveler didn't complete a pass until late in the fourth quarter, but that didn't slow them, as they ran over San Jose State 24-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Streveler, who was starting in place of the injured Mitch Leidner, impacted the game in other ways as he rushed for 161 yards in the game.

David Cobb led the ground attack, he ran for 207 yards on 34 carries to bury the Spartans. As a team Minnesota ran for 380 yards on the afternoon.

The Gophers (3-1) got on the scoreboard first on a 38-yard field goal from Ryan Santoso on their opening drive. The drive was set up on an interception by Damarius Travis.

Later in the first, Cobb got in the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown run, to put Minnesota up 10-0.

San Jose State answered back in the closing seconds of the first as quarterback Blake Jurich hit Tyler Winston on a 27 yard touchdown pass to cut the Gophers lead to three at 10-7.

After driving down the field near the end of the half the Gophers turned the ball over when Streveler was intercepted and it looked like Minnesota would go into the half with just a three point lead, but the Spartans gave it right back, and the Gophers took advantage.

As time expired near the end of the half, Streveler burst into the end zone on a quarterback sneak to put the Gophers up 17-7. The rains came early in the fourth quarter and forced a brief stoppage in play.

After the rain and in the games closing minutes Streveler found tight end Drew Wolitarsky for his first completion of the game.

Streveler finished 1 of 7 for 7 yards on the afternoon.

The Gophers head to Ann Arbor, Michigan next Saturday in their Big Ten opener.
