Don Lucia's Golden Gophers whipped Sacred Heart 9-0 in the season opener at Mariucci Arena Friday night. Minnesota scored four goals in a dominant second period to pull away for the route. The two teams will play again Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Don Lucia's hockey Gophers open the non-conference season tonight at Mariucci Arena as they face off against Sacred Heart. The Pioneers had an abysmal record last year, but after getting bounced from the 2011 WCHA playoffs by Alaska-Anchorage the No. 19 Gophers refuse to take any team lightly.

Gophers complete first sweep of 2012

Minnesota (19-9-1, 13-5-0 WCHA) held onto a 3-2 victory over St. Cloud State University Saturday night at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies (10-14-4, 7-10-3 WCHA) netted the first lead, but the Gophers freshman forward Sam Warning went to score the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the third. Minnesota is off to Denver in two weeks. The Gophers now lead UMD by five points in the WCHA standings.

Hockey Gophers face tougher test at Duluth

The hockey Gophers blasted Sacred Heart last weekend, scoring 15 goals in two games. It’ll get a little tougher tomorrow night in Duluth, where Minnesota takes on on the defending national champion Bulldogs in a weekend series. Right now, UMD is ranked No. 9 in the nation, the Gophers are ranked 14th.
