Gophers trample Spiders to win third straight to open season

The Minnesota Gopher mens basketball team defeated Richmond 74-59 on Saturday night. A 19-0 run by the Gophers allowed them to close out the game in dramatic fashion.

The Pioneer Press reports the Gophers held Richmond scoreless for the final 7:24.

Andre Hollins scored 26 points to lead Minnesota, while Austin Hollins posted a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Malik Smith added 11 and Joey King 10 as they were the four Gophers in double figures.

The Gophers built a quick 14 point lead at 27-13 early in the game, but Richmond battled back to cut the lead to three at the half 40-37.

The teams exchanged leads back and forth throughout the second half, but the Gophers closed the game late on a 19-0 run. The run started with Minnesota trailing 59-55. An Andre Hollins jumper put the Gophers up for good at 61-59, and the Spiders didn't find the net the rest of the night.

Neither team shot very well, Minnesota shot just 37 percent from the floor on the night, and struggled further from behind the arc as they were just 7 of 25 from downtown.

But the Gophers won the game on the glass, out rebounding the Spiders 54-37. Minnesota finished with 19 offensive boards in the game.
