Governor's Fishing Opener: Dayton starts fishless, Lt. Gov. hooks season's first catch

It's called the Governor's Fishing Opener – but Mark Dayton got beat by his lieutenant governor in the race to catch the first fish.

Yvonne Prettner Solon hooked a walleye around 1 a.m. – and got another just a few minutes later. Dayton, meanwhile, was on Gull Lake all night but failed to catch a fish, ABC6 News reports.

Dayton was in a boat with local fishing guide Ray Gildow, former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Eric Magnuson, and Tom Brown. He returned to the lake at 8 a.m. for the official send off.

The governor's office is encouraging people to post photos of their catch today on Twitter, using the hashtag #GFO2014.

Conditions in Nisswa are fair this morning, according to the National Weather Service. It was partly cloudy and hovering around 55 degrees around 9:30 a.m., with a high of 65 slated for the day. Rain is expected to move in come the afternoon however, with a 70 percent chance of showers by early evening.

More than 500,000 Minnesota anglers are expected to be out on the lakes Saturday for the fishing opener. Thirty-two percent of Minnesotans fish, a state resident participation rate second only to Alaska.

Forum News Service reports a bait shortage – particularly shiners – could cause trouble this weekend.

If you plan to get out later this weekend, take note: The Minnesota Department of Transportation says road construction projects could cause some delays. You can see a list of places to be wary of here.
