Jan 18 is an unofficial holiday here in the State of Hockey.
Unofficial games and parties are being organized on Facebook and Twitter.
Hockey central is at Handke Stadium in Elk River. The Elk River Chamber of Commerce website posted the lineup:
10:15 am Class A: Rochester Lourdes Eagles vs. CEC Lumberjacks
1:00 pm Class AA: Elk River Elks vs. Stillwater Ponies
4:00 pm Girls AA: Elk River Elks vs. Anoka Tornadoes
According to WCCO. the stadium is affectionately called "The Pit." It's a glacially formed natural pond where organized hockey began in Elk River more than 60 years ago.
One resident called it a small town's version of New York City's Central Park. Besides hockey, it was drained and used for baseball and football.
After The Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt made its refurbishment a project of the Works Projects Administration. Workers used river rock to build walls, walks and a warming house, which is the only one in the nation makde entirely of stone.
Now the stadium is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
If hockey is not your thing but you still want to spend the weekend out doors, consider ice fishing. The Pioneer Press reports it's free all weekend as long as you're accompanied by a child.
