A 55-foot prayer was answered when Hopkins basketball star Amir Coffey's shot at the buzzer from beyond half-court in the fourth overtime of the Class 4A state tournament semifinals hit nothing but the bottom of the net, sending the top-ranked Royals to the Class 4A state championship game.

The miracle heave gave Hopkins a 49-46 win over a defensive-minded Shakopee team.

The half-court-plus fling by Coffey, son of former Golden Gopher Amir Coffey, was one of only two shots the guard made all night. The Star Tribune says the replay showed that Coffey got his buzzer beater off just in time.

Hopkins head coach Ken Novak Jr. said the shot rivals the Blake Hoffarber shot, where the former Gopher sharpshooter hit a shot from his backside at the buzzer to send the Royals to the state title game. Hoffarber won an ESPY Award.

The win advanced No. 1-seeded Hopkins to the 4A Championship game against No. 2 Lakeville North, which beat Cretin-Derham Hall 55-52 in the final game of the night.

The 4A title game is set for Saturday night at 9 p.m. at Target Center.

In Class 1A quarterfinal action Thursday, No. 1 seed Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa dominated Park Christian 85-50 in the first game of the day, while No. 5 Fond du Lac Ojibwe squeaked by No. 4 Canby 85-82 in triple overtime.

In addition, No. 2 Red Lake rolled over Maranatha Christian Academy 95-67, and No. 3 Rushford Peterson topped Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 71-63.
