Apple Valley, Simley, Chatfield crowned state wrestling champs
Three state wrestling champions have been crowned at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Apple Valley, Simley and Chatfield are celebrating team state wrestling championships after a marathon day of wrestling.
To win the championship each of the teams had to win three duel matches, Thursday.
In Class AAA, Apple Valley completed a perfect season at 33-0 with a decisive 56-9 win over the Prior Lake. The Pioneer Press reports Apple Valley's victory caps a state record ninth consecutive state championship.
No one really came close to beating the Eagles all day. In the first round, Apple Valley defeated Maple Grove 64-4. In the semifinals, they ripped Hastings 65-3 to move into the championship, which they won in an equally dominating fashion.
Simley captured the Class AA Championship. They defeated Scott West in the title match 33-21. Simley finished the season at 25-3 and beat Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo 46-12 in the first round, before knocking off Kasson-Mantorville 40-19 in the semifinals.
In Class A, Chatfield beat Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 38-22. Chatfield completes the season with just one loss at 26-1. To reach the championship they had to beat a pair of one loss teams, beating Pierz in the quarterfinals 40-18 and Frazee in the semis 38-19.
