Hill-Murray 8th-grader maps out college hockey career

He's only an 8th-grader, but Roseville native Joey Anderson knows what he wants.

The Hill-Murray hockey standout has made a verbal commitment to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Anderson, 14, made the decision last week, and according to Duluth News Tribune, it wasn't that difficult.

"I’m comfortable there,” Anderson told reporter Kevin Pates.

Anderson's father, Gerry, grew up in the Duluth area, and attended Duluth Denfeld High School. He was a senior on Denfeld’s 1985-86 team, the first in school history to qualify for the state tournament.

Anderson's grandfather, Tom, played hockey at UMD in 1952-53 ... in the program’s pre-Division I era.

Anderson, likely the youngest recruit in Bulldog history, is set to reach campus in 2017.

According to SB Nation, he's considered by many to be one of the top 1998-born players in the United States.

As an 8th-grader, Anderson started the year on the Pioneers' JV squad. But when he made the move to varsity, he scored nine goals and 21 points in 14 games.

At the end of the season, he also found himself in the Class AA championship hockey game -- which the Pioneers dropped to Edina, 5-2.
