History will be made when the Lynx and Sparks square off

It is safe to say that Tuesday afternoon's WNBA matchup between the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks at Staples Center is the biggest regular season game in the history of the league.

The Lynx and Sparks come into the game with a combined record of 23-0. Prior to this season, no team had ever started a WNBA season at 11-0, but now there are two – Minnesota is 12-0, while LA is 11-0.

But it goes a little further than that.

According to USA Today, no two teams have ever played after starting the season with more than 10 wins and no losses or ties in the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL or MLS.

"It's exciting for fans of this league, and a chance to get some more eyeballs on this league," said Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve during a conference call with reporters Monday. "We're doing something that no league in professional sports has done – having two teams that are undefeated – no losses, no ties, at this point in the season. So that's something external that's great for the league."

What's more, the meeting comes on the anniversary of the league's first game in 1997, and comes at a time when the NBA Finals have just concluded, the NFL is on its brief hiatus and golf's U.S. Open concluded on Sunday.

Will a rivalry be born?

While no championships will be won or lost on Tuesday there are some high stakes.

There's plenty of star power: Minnesota has Maya Moore and L.A. has Candace Parker – considered by many to be two of the best players in the league.

There's some history: Brian Agler is in his second season as the Sparks head coach – he coached the Lynx from 1999-2002.

And Minnesota eliminated Los Angeles from the playoffs last season.

It could also be a little preview of what's to come in the WNBA Finals. The two teams meet in back-to-back games against each other, first on the West Coast Tuesday afternoon and then on Friday night, back at Target Center.

According to The Ringer, they are the odd-on favorites to win the title this year and with the changes made to the league's playoff system, there's a chance they could meet in the finals.

Tip-off Tuesday is at 2:30.
