Former Twins closer Joe Nathan had a cup of coffee with the Cubs before he was designated for assignment, and now the 41 year old has signed with the San Francisco Giants.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman was the first to report Nathan's new deal, which will start him at Double-A.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nathan is in Double-A and not Triple-A just so he can pitch closer to his home in New York. There's a good chance he's called up before September, when MLB rosters can expand to 40 players.

Nathan wasn't bad with the Cubs, but they barely used him. In three appearances he pitched 2 innings where he allowed 2 hits, 2 walks, 0 runs while striking out 4.

This is now full circle for Nathan, who was originally drafted by the Giants before being traded to the Twins in the A.J. Pierzynski deal.
