Jones, defending champion Apple Valley eliminated before state

An upset has stopped defending Class AAA Champion Apple Valley from returning to the state tournament.

Cretin-Derham Hall defeated Apple Valley and Tyus Jones 89-77 in double overtime in the Section Championship game.

KSTP reports that Jones, who is bound for Duke, scored 35 points before leaving the game with an injury with just under a minute to play in overtime. The game was delayed several minutes as Jones and Dennis Austin were both injured.

According to KSTP, Jones did eventually return, but Austin appeared to suffer a more serious back injury.

After neither team scored in the first overtime, Cretin-Derham Hall took over in the second one, going on a 14-3 run to take a 10 point lead with a minute to go.

Michael Hannon had 26 to lead the Raiders, Donnell Gresham added 22.

For Cretin-Derham Hall it's a return to state for the first time since 2011. The Raiders won state titles in both 1991 and 1993.
