Lack of trust in Sendejo, Blanton could get Exum first starting shot

Getting consistent play at the safety position has been a two-part story for the Minnesota Vikings.

  • Part 1: Harrison Smith is consistent at free safety
  • Part 2: Robert Blanton and Andrew Sendejo are not at strong safety

As Viking Update notes, Sendejo has already lost his starting job twice in four weeks; once because of performance and again due to injury. Blanton's performance thus far can pretty much be summed up by

" target="_blank">an angle he took against the Broncos that probably made head coach Mike Zimmer want to enroll Blanton in a basic geometry class. Blanton is shown in the photo below failing to run down Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman on a 71-yard touchdown run.

The lack of production from Sendejo and Smith could mean Antone Exum gets a shot to start at strong safety Sunday when the Vikings host the Chiefs.

Zimmer on if Exum has a chance to start: “Potentially. If I feel good about him."

“I definitely think I’m ready now to get a shot out there,” Exum said Wednesday, according to the Star Tribune.

Exum was a late-round draft pick by the Vikings in 2014. With 12 games to play, he could soon find himself with an opportunity to claim the job at a position of weakness in the Vikings' secondary.
