Lucia inks 2-year extension with Gopher hockey team

Don Lucia is now signed through the 2018-19 season, which would be his 20th with the Gophers.

Don Lucia isn't going anywhere.

The Gophers men's hockey coach on Thursday agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him on the Minnesota bench through the 2018-19 season.

"It’s truly an honor to coach this program, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished here at the University of Minnesota,” Lucia said in a statement. "We have high expectations for ourselves just like we know people have high expectations for us, and our program is proud of the bar we have set. We require dedication and excellence in everything we do, and everybody in our locker room buys into that. We’ve had that mindset since we got here, and our goals aren’t going to change."

Lucia and the Gophers have won all three conference titles since the Big Ten debuted in hockey in 2013.

Minnesota opens the 2016-17 season Friday at Alaska-Anchorage. They return to Mariucci Arena next weekend to play the U.S. Under-18 team before opening the regular season against St. Cloud State on Oct. 21.
