A big reason the Minnesota Lynx are once again atop the WNBA standings is because of All-Star center Sylvia Fowles, who on Friday agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the Lynx.

WNBA contract details aren't disclosed, but Lynx Executive Vice President Roger Griffith said in a statement that Fowles is a player they wanted here for the long haul.

“We are happy to have extended the contract of one of our team leaders and one of the best players in the WNBA,” said Griffith. “When we traded for Sylvia two seasons ago, we did so with the goal of winning more championships. That decision has paid off so far after she helped guide us to the 2015 WNBA Championship. Over the last three years, Sylvia has been an integral part of our success and is undoubtedly one of the elite centers in the WNBA. We are thrilled that she’s decided to continue her career with the Lynx.”

Fowles is fifth in the league in scoring and second in rebounds, averaging 19.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

At 25-7, the Lynx are one game ahead of the Sparks for the best record in the league. Minnesota hosts the Chicago Sky Friday night while the Sparks are at home against the Atlanta Dream.

The regular season wraps up on Sunday and both teams are in action: The Lynx host the Washington Mystics and the Sparks host the Connecticut Sun.
