Making history: Canterbury analyst will become 1st female track announcer in US

Author:

Angela Hermann isn't a rookie when it comes to calling horse races, but she is breaking ground as the first full-time female track announcer in North America.

Hermann, who horse racing fans would recognize as a paddock analyst at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, was hired as the full-time announcer at Golden Gate Fields in California for the remainder of the spring season, which ends June 18.

"The opportunity is extraordinary," Hermann said in a statement. "This new challenge will hopefully inspire many more women to take the same chance. For a job that relies on my words, it’s hard to find them to describe the feeling it gives me. I’m very, very excited."

Vikings, Canterbury announcer proud of her

Hermann, 29, started blazing her historic trail in 2013 when she became the first woman in North America to call a full card of races, the Star Tribune reported. She did it at Canterbury Park as substitute to longtime track announcer (and radio voice of the Minnesota Vikings) Paul Allen.

"Angela was a quick study," Allen told BringMeTheNews. "She loves horse racing more than anybody I have met in my 27 years in the game. She was nervous at first but overcame it to provide good, accurate, concise calls. I am thrilled she gets this opportunity and welcome her to the announcing game."

In an interview with Midwest Paddock Review, Hermann said leaving Canterbury Park makes her "want to cry" but she "can’t pass up this opportunity."

Fans in the San Francisco area can now hear Hermann make history every Thursday-Sunday from now until mid-June.
