Mardy Fish says he's returning to tennis

Mardy Fish is making a full return to tennis starting with the Atlanta Open July 22.

Fish, an Edina native, has played in just one ATP tour event since September of last year.

He missed about two and 1/2 months in early 2012 because of an accelerated heartbeat, which was resolved shortly after. According to the Pioneer Press, Fish hinted during a conference call that his full return was delayed until now because of some mental hurdles.

"I'm trying to make sure mentally I'm where I want to be," he said. "Some days are better than others. Some weeks are better than others."

Fish says he's been working with a performance psychologist to help clear the mental obstacles.

"I've turned the corner and been able to train as hard as I possibly can the last three months," Fish said.
