Mercury torch Lynx in first game of Western Conference Finals

The Minnesota Lynx were beaten handily by the Phoenix Mercury during the opening game of the Western Conference Finals 85-71.

Phoenix now leads the best of three game series 1-0.

It was a rough night for the Lynx as Phoenix was clearly the superior team on Friday. The Mercury basically led throughout the game, extending a three-point first quarter to lead to 11 before the half.

Then in the second half Phoenix pushed the lead to 67-47 by the end of the third quarter.

Minnesota tried to rally in the fourth and they cut it to 11 with just over five minutes to go, but they couldn't get any closer.

Brittney Griner and Penny Taylor had double-doubles to lead the Mercury. Griner was unstoppable inside with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Taylor finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Lindsay Whalen had 25 points for Minnesota, but she wasn't overly efficient shooting 11-of-23. Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson each had 12.

Maya Moore was off her game, the WNBA MVP had just nine points and played just 27 minutes.

Game two is scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Target Center.
