Minnesota already owns the record for coldest game in MLS history

Minnesota's expansion soccer team got rocked in a really cold game.

Major League Soccer in Minnesota got off to a historic start Sunday.

Unfortunately for the United, the historic part of the story has nothing to do with soccer. According to MLS officials, the 19-degree temperature made Sunday's game at TCF Bank Stadium the coldest in MLS history.

The previous record was 20 degrees set in Kansas City in December of 2013.

As for the game, the Loons were obliterated 6-1 by fellow expansion team Atlanta United.

"I think the only positive we can take from today is the people who braved the elements to come out," said United FC head coach Adrian Heath, according to the team's website. "I thought their support was incredible. It's just a pity that we couldn't give them any type of performance that warranted the support that we got today. So, very disappointed and I apologize for that because they didn't deserve that. We've got a lot of hard work ahead of us."

The Loons are back in action Saturday at Colorado.
