Minnesota father embraced after wrestling match while battling cancer dies

Steve McKee will be remembered as a loving father, whose embrace with his son – and his son's opponent – after a state title bout drew the eyes of the entire nation.

It was in March when the 51-year-old father – battling a cancer that was supposed to have stolen his life from him at that point – watched his son, St. Michael-Albertville's Mitchell McKee, win the state high school wrestling championship.

Afterward Mitchell's opponent, despite having just been defeated, walked over to Steve McKee matside and embraced the beloved dad.

That act of compassion led to a standing ovation, as onlookers wiped tears from their eyes.

This past weekend, a year after doctors told him he had just two months to live, Steve McKee died, North Wright County Today reports.

Both the Minnesota State High School League and St. Michael-Albertville Wrestling acknowledged the loss on their Facebook pages.

Steve McKee had been battling a rare form of cancer for nearly all of 2013.

In December of that year, he was told the tumor in his chest had metastasized and that he only had two months to live, the Star Tribune reported.

Despite the diagnosis, Steve McKee held on to the goal of seeing his son, a sophomore, wrestle in the state tournament.

Steve McKee watched as his son quickly pinned Malik in the title bout in March. Then the nation watched Steve as Stewart and Mitchell went over and hugged the ailing man.

Here's a CBS Sunday Morning piece on the McKees, days later.

Funeral and visitation details are expected to be announced later.
